Green Tea Fields

The tour also stopped at green tea fields near Chiang Rai. Although not matcha in the Japanese sense, the plantations grow tea varieties common in northern Thailand. The rolling green rows against the backdrop of hills make for an excellent photo stop and a nice break from temples.

Final Thoughts

If we had more time, we would have preferred exploring Chiang Rai on our own rather than as part of a strict group tour. If time isn’t an issue for you, it’s definitely worth considering an overnight stay, as it allows for a more relaxed pace and the chance to visit temples outside of peak hours.

On the other hand, if your schedule is tight, the full-day tour is a solid option. Despite the trade-offs (group pace, timetable constraints, crowds), it lets you see the highlights of Chiang Rai in one efficient day, freeing up more time for other destinations like Koh Tao or Pai, which, for us, were some of the trip’s most memorable stops.
